Within the framework of the 7th Central European Biomass Conference in Graz, Federal Minister Leonore Gewessler (Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation & Technology) and klimaaktiv QM Heizwerke awarded Austrian biomass heating plants and heating networks. The award ceremony took place on 19 January 2023. The winning projects meet the highest technical and economic efficiency criteria and were awarded for the use of renewable energy sources, their coherent overall concepts and the special commitment of the plant operators.

We are particularly pleased about the award for the ThermaFLEX demonstrator and the biomass heating plant Saalfelden of Salzburg AG. Multi-layered modernisation measures were implemented in the heating plant. The modernisation led to an increase in the energy efficiency of the existing biomass boiler system as well as a significant reduction of the fossil share in the energy mix.

Based on the results and findings, additional technical concepts were developed to integrate a heat pump to further increase efficiency and to increase the share of renewable energy in the energy mix. Implementation is planned for 2023.
